Welcome to Monieux

for all nature lovers

650 m in altitude, Monieux is located on the south-eastern side of the Ventoux and faces east towards the sunrise. Below, the Nesque river, modest and peaceful, nonchalantly meanders along before disgorging itself into the wild ravines, notched into the limestone rocks.

Monieux is inextricably linked with the history of Les Gorges de la Nesque, whose human occupation is dated back to pre-Neandertal times (approximately 200 000 years before J.C – according to recent archaeological excavations of Bau de l'Aubesier). This site, known as Mons Jovis during Gallic-Roman times, was established as Monilis at the beginning of the middle ages, belonging to the county of Sault. It became Monjeu in the XVIIIth century, then Monieux in the XIXth century.

It is extremely pleasant to stroll through the lanes lined with picturesque XVIIth and XVIIIth century houses.
To visit:
- Saint-Pierre XIIth century Church (Romanesque choirstalls and XIIth century cupola), open all year round,
- Vestiges of medieval ramparts, millers door, oratories, plague wall, watch tower,
- Vestiges of XIIth century chapels, Saint-Roch chapel,
- Michaelmas XIIth century chapel, located at the foot of the Gorges de la Nesque,
- The pond of 2ha50 about 1km south-east from the village,
- Arts and crafts, various expositions organized by the local tourist office.
